| The following information is for patients who have an appointment for a lung function test at Southern Region Respiratory Service (SRRS).
1. Making an appointment
Your doctor will provide you with an SRRS lung function test appointment form. This form includes information on what tests your doctor would like performed, details of you relevant medical history and our contact details.
Your doctor’s receptionist may then make the appointment on your behalf or you may be required to make the appointment yourself. If this is the case please contact SRRS:

The appointment form is for a lung function test only. If your doctor has indicated you are to have a subsequent consultation with an SRRS physician an accompanying referral letter must be provided.
2. Preparing for your appointment
Your appointment will be confirmed by SRRS the day before. You will be asked a series of questions relating to the medication you are taking and your smoking habits.
You may be required to stop taking your medications and cease smoking for a period of time before your appointment and this will be explained to you.
3. Arriving for your appointment
Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time. There are no special clothing requirements however we recommend that you wear something comfortable.

- 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays

Frankston Laboratory Hours:
- Mondays only: 8:15am to 4:30pm
4. Lung function testing
When you arrive for your appointment one of our scientists will check and record your weight and height. A brief history of your smoking habits and the medications you take will be discussed.
Lung function tests take between half an hour to 45 minutes, depending upon the range of tests to be performed. A scientist will be with you the whole time and no strenuous exercise will be required. You will remain seated during the testing process and you can remain in your wheel chair if you use one.
5. Paying for your tests
All lung function tests are bulk billed through Medicare or veteran affairs if you have a gold card.
It is very important that you bring your Medicare card or Veterans’ Affairs card with you to your appointment.
6. Lung function Test results and follow-up with your doctor
You lung function test results will be forwarded to your referring doctor, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
Your results will not be discussed with you and you must make a follow-up appointment with your referring doctor.
7. What to do if you can’t keep an appointment
If you cannot keep your appointment we require 24 to 48 hours notice and we will need to reschedule your appointment.
